Leicester City Council teams up with Rediweld to create a cyclist-friendly pathway using innovative Splitter Islands
Leicester City Council embarked on a mission to enhance cycling safety in the vibrant area close to De Montfort University and The Leicester Royal Infirmary. A pop-up cycle lane, installed to provide a safe route on the busy campus, was made permanent and the busy route improved, with the Mill Lane bridge as a central focus.
Our innovative bolt-down Splitter Islands, manufactured from recycled rubber, provide an eco-friendly alternative to conventional materials and are available in widths of 400 mm and 500 mm. Due to the flexibility of our products, the One Piece WandOrcas that were originally installed, have been uplifted to allow for the wider product, but will now be used elsewhere in the city on another segregation scheme.
The 400 mm Rediweld Splitter Island was installed in 4 m segments, enhanced by two passively safe Jislon Pole Cones. With diamond-grade reflective material, these Splitter Islands carve out a crucial safe passage on the bridge and its approach roads. As a result, the previously challenging junction for cyclists has been transformed into a significantly safer route due to the effective segregation, leading to increased usage by students, hospital staff, and delivery workers alike.
